Improving Paragraphs

(1) In recent years, the craft of knitting has started to enjoy a resurgence. (2) Many people and even some celebrities have started to pick up this handicraft, settling into the rhythmic nature of two needles clicking together to create fabric. (3) Knitting had gone out of favor and was associated with a stodgy past when women were forced to knit socks to keep the family warm. (4) A whole generation turned its back on knitting, eager to embrace the new world of machine-made socks and garments.

(5) Several hundred years ago in Britain, this was not the case. (6) Then, knitting was the task of men who made socks to sell and to make extra money for the family. (7) During the Elizabethan Renaissance, Queen Elizabeth had to put protective laws in place to make sure that families were not driven into further poverty by new looms, which could create fabric faster than the human hand. (8) Women were too busy in the kitchen to occupy themselves with the time-consuming task of knitting.

(9) Today, a handmade sweater is a luxury, particularly if it is made from cashmere. (10) With the growing trend toward handicrafts as fashion, hand knitting looks to only grow as a favored craft. (11) There are even boutiques that advertise their wares as wearable art. (12) Like pottery or weaving, knitting is another occupation that has gone from being a work of necessity to approaching art.
